Treasure Mapping to Achieve Business Goals

puzzletreasure mapHave you ever really strongly wanted to achieve something?  Have you ever tried closing your eyes and imagining yourself “there”?  Try it.  Close your eyes and imagine yourself ‘there’ achieving your dream.  Imagine yourself touching it, walking through it.  Feel it and see it clearly.  Scan every detail…  This simple visualization exercise is a powerful and important technique for motivating yourself and building the self-confidence needed to achieve your goals. Yet when you open your eyes, the vivid image starts to fade, and more often than not gets lost in the hustle and bustle of your important and busy day.

But what if you could keep hold of that vivid image and refer to it whenever you need a little motivation, lose focus and need a reminder of what you are working toward?  Enter Treasure Mapping.

Treasure Mapping involves creating a physical representation or a collage of what you want to achieve. It acts as a constant reminder and representation of your goals. It intensifies the effects of your visualization, which acts on your subconscious mind to motivate and encourage you towards achieving your dreams.

The exercise of a treasure map allows you the luxury of picturing your desired reality.  There is something very powerful about allowing yourself the time and the gift of thinking about and visualizing your dream. Your vision. Its funny how in today’s hustle and bustle we try to create and run our homes, our businesses, our lives and yet we never take the time to dream them up. To visualize them completely.  But it is precisely these dreams that are the vision and fuel behind the greatest success stories.  Treasure mapping takes your idea or vision a step further and creates a physical representation of this dream.

In business, building a Treasure Map is ever more important.  It is your business blueprint.  You wouldn’t build a house or building without a blueprint, right? So how could you build your dream business without your business blueprint.  A treasure map is so powerful because first and foremost, it forces you to think through your dream in its entirety – a necessity in today’s constantly changing and uber competitive world.  A treasure map is also the most powerful tool we have to help transform  your business from a dream into a reality.  On a psychological level, a treasure map is a tool, that once used, allows you to step bigger and act in ways that you wouldn’t have dared to before.  To set bigger goals and know that they are achievable.

If you want to run a successful business, a treasure map is a non-negotiable essential item.  All successful entrepreneurs have a vision. They’ve taken their vision and brought it to life.  A treasure map is this vision. Your vision.

So what is a treasure map and how do you create one?  A Treasure map is a physical picture of your desired reality.  With it you create a diorama or a collage, using any medium you desire (a photo album, a poster, a website, a journal and so on).  With this diorama, you begin to illustrate your current reality and experience your desired reality.

You can make a treasure map by drawing or painting it, or by making a collage using pictures and words cut from magazines, books or cards, photographs, drawings, and so on. Don’t worry if you’re not artistically accomplished. Simple, childlike treasure maps are just as effective as great works of art!  Basically the treasure map should show you in your ideal scene, with your goal fully realized.

I love the idea of creating a visual cue, so-to-speak, in order to maintain f ocus. We have our to-do lists, and we decorate our living space with pictures and photos of people and places or things that are meaningful. Why not establish a visual reminder of our business dream? What’s really great is that it sounds like you get to develop the “map” over time, so it’s continuously evolving and staying fresh. I can’t wait to learn more!
